Innovations and Insights in Electric Rickshaw Design

Electric Rickshaws, commonly known as E-Rickshaws, made their debut in the Delhi NCR region during the 2010 Commonwealth Games (Telegraph,2010). In 2015, the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act established E-Rickshaw as a distinct vehicle category. Surprisingly, no comprehensive study exists to assess the current population of E-Rickshaws operating in Delhi NCR or other states. Moreover, only a limited number of manufacturers are officially registered with Delhi Government, producing genuine and registered E-Rickshaws.

After researching 10+ models both government and ICAT approved and local makers and assemblers and interviewing 29 E-Rickshaw driver from Delhi NCR we have concluded on these findings:

The future expectations of E-Rickshaw users are expected to align with their current priorities, which include battery performance, comfortable driver seats, and effective suspension and brakes. There are two distinct user categories, with metro stations serving as prime locations for E-Rickshaw drivers to find passengers, contributing to the rapid growth of this business model in cities. It’s worth noting that this data is based on qualitative research with 29 E-Rickshaw drivers, 40 passengers, and 7 E-Loader drivers. For greater precision, a quantitative study is needed.
